Circles of friends

Had dinner with the Consul General of Singapore today. He and his wife were on a visiting trip to Toronto city. From the interaction, he really has the style of the civil servant ~ the way he talks, the batik shirt he wears, the charisma he holds, the topics he talks about, how well-versed and cultured he is...

Something that I also realized while during the dinner is that I have many friends who pursue interests outside work such as sporting, writing novels, volunteering, hosting comedy shows, designers, song writing, plays in bands, photography, music, painting etc. They are people who have passion to do things that they truely enjoy! Also my circle of friends here in Canada include different professionals such as people in the banking & finance industry, big 4 accounting firms, entrepreneuers, graphics designers, mathematicians, professors, fashion designers, volunteers, makeup artists, nurses etc.

As compared to Singapore, most of my colleagues are all workaholics (like me too), so they invest all their time in the office, thus they don't usually have other hobbies then, other than sleeping, eating and shopping. Those with families will be spending their time for their loved ones. Also my groups of friends are usually the IT people, the engineers, accountants, bankers, financial advisors etc. So this is the type of output and outcomes generated from the system!

No, nothing bad about that, but just the different situations and realities across 2 countries...
